Respiratory Therapy

Aims:

The aim of the 4 years degree programme in Respiratory Therapy is to equip the students with relevant professional knowledge, skills, techniques and ethical values to enable them to apply their acquired expertise at the level between the doctors and the patient for efficient health service delivery.

Course Objectives:

Respiratory Therapy education and training should enable the student to:

  • Develop accuracy and meticulousness to attain high levels of ethics and technical
  • Assess the technical and non technical skills in a standardized and reproducible environment.
  • Strengthen the decision power and exercise appropriate judgment skills, to be applied especially during crisis.
  • Develop good leadership, problem solving and administrative skills.
  • Develop and analyze innovative strategies for effective communication with the patients and the healthcare personnel.
  • Demonstrate interdisciplinary team building strategies for effective co ordination between various Allied Health Disciplines
  • Demonstrate understanding of the basic concepts of professional behavior and legal implications of the work environment.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge of his / her role in health care delivery system.
  • Establishing and maintaining continuing education as a function of growth and maintenance of professional competence.

Program Outcomes:

Following competencies will be expected from a student completing 4 years degree course in Respiratory Therapy. The student should be proficient to:

  • Apply scientific principles for the identification, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of acute and chronic cardiopulmonary disorders.
  • Review data of patients, collects additional data and help develop a respiratory care plan to determine the appropriateness of the current therapy.
  • Administer medical gases, humidification and aerosol medications, postural drainage, bronchopulmonary hygiene, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, monitor mechanically ventilated patients, maintain artificial airways and perform pulmonary function testing.
  • Document necessary information in the patent’s medical record.
  • Practice infection control procedures and personal hygiene consistent with professionals in close contact with patients.
  • Perform diagnostic procedures, interpret results, determine pathophysiological state and perform continuous quality improvement.
  • Select, assemble, and check equipment for proper function, operation, and cleanliness
  • Be adept in correcting malfunctions of respiratory equipment.
  • Initiate, conduct, and/or modify respiratory care techniques in an emergency setting.
  • Apply basic scientific principles in learning new techniques and procedures.
  • Assist the physician and surgeons with special procedures.
  • Apply Respiratory Care Protocols appropriately in the clinical settings.
  • Conduct research relevant to the field of respiratory therapy.
  • Perform patient & public education, relevant to his profession.
