Institute of Microbiology

Introduction:

The Institute of Microbiology under Gulab Devi Educational Complex (GDEC), Lahore was established in 2016. The Institute is serving fundamental aspects of basic biology with a wide range of topics including bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, microbial physiology, molecular biology, microbial genetics, microbial ecology, pathology, immunology, virology, and cell biology.

Vision:

The vision of the Institute of Microbiology is to organize and expose students to scientific community through conferences and seminars and to provide opportunities to students within different fields. The Institute provides job careers to students and strengthens undergraduates that will be the future leaders in science, medicine and industry. Moreover, collaboration with different Universities/Institutes, dissemination and promotion of scientific knowledge to the general public through research outputs are also part of the Institute’s vision.

Mission:

The mission of the Institute is to provide the fundamental knowledge and concepts of Microbiology and to develop confidence within students through research and education. Personalized mentoring to support students in order to progress is also a part of this mission. For the establishment of Microbiology research projects and to develop research skills our Institute play’s a very important role in developing appropriate skills and counseling of students by providing fundamental training to undergraduate students.

Objectives:

The 4 year BS Program at the Institute of Microbiology, affiliated with Government College University Faisalabad, Faisalabad, aims to provide training and research to undergraduate students. This program also supports:

  • Training of fundamentally important pathogenic organisms in order to understand the physiological, biochemical and genetic aspects of microbes.
  • Undergraduate students to acquire good knowledge of Microbiology techniques and to understand environmental contamination.

The students will have a solid knowledge of principles of Microbiology, acquiring great information of microbial world, understand the microbial diversity, taxonomy and dynamics of microbial interactions with other populations. It would lead to develop new technologies in future to improve lives of people and treat diseases.

Future Opportunities:

A wide range of activities and opportunities are available for the students after completing the BS 4 year Microbiology degree.

  • Microbiologists may serve in academia by teaching at college and University level.
  • Medical Microbiologist may work in laboratories of research organizations and hospitals to inspect the role of micro-organisms in human and animal diseases and to find ways to prevent and cure diseases.
  • Agricultural microbiologist may play a role in developing genetically engineered crops to provide greater yields, require less pesticide and fertilizer; increase soil fertility and less spoilage of farm products and plant diseases caused by microbes.
  • Food microbiologist may ensure product quality and production efficiency.
  • Graduates may serve in water and dairy industry, as nanotechnologist and chemical technologist.
  • May serve in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies to develop new medicines such as vaccines and antibiotics.
  • May serve as a Mycologists and Industrial microbiologists to develop alternative energy sources such as biofuels, beverages, citric acids and Vitamin C.
  • May serve in environmental sector to safeguard public health and pollution control program.
