Departmental Facilities:

The Department of Microbiology at Gulab Devi Educational Complex is equipped with comprehensive and cutting-edge facilities that enhance both academic learning and research. These resources provide an enriching environment for students to thrive in the dynamic field of microbiology.

  1. Lecture rooms/halls

The department has air-conditioned lecture rooms/halls and conference/seminar rooms for faculty and students. All lecture and seminar rooms are equipped with advanced multimedia facilities, including projectors for effective delivery of lectures and presentations. These resources facilitate a dynamic learning atmosphere and promote academic excellence.

  1. Teaching lab

The state-of-the-art teaching laboratory provides students with hands-on experience in microbiological techniques and experiments. It is equipped with modern equipment’s such as biosafety cabinet, microscopes, centrifuges, incubators, autoclave, thermocycler, gel electrophoresis and other essential tools to facilitate practical learning. The laboratory has the capacity to cater 50 students at a time and has facilities for different experiments, from microbial culturing to identification of microorganisms using biochemical and molecular techniques.

  1. Library

Library is equipped with an extensive collection of over 6000 books and 15 impact factor scientific journals along with different newspapers providing the comprehensive resources for learning and research. Students and faculty also have access to the HEC Digital Library, which enables them to explore a vast repository of online resources, including e-books, research articles, and international journals, ensuring access to the latest advancements in microbiology and related fields.

  1. Computer Lab

A dedicated computer lab with a capacity of 100 students, provides an ideal environment for learning essential computational techniques in microbiology, including genome analysis, statistical modeling, and database management. The lab is equipped with advanced computers, high-speed internet, and specialized software for bioinformatics, data analysis, and research simulations, ensuring students have access to cutting-edge tools for their academic and research needs.

  1. Extra-curricular activities

The department encourages the students to actively participate in various extracurricular activities through its dynamic society, ‘Life Sciences Visionary’ to enhance their personal and professional development. Activities such as seminars, workshops, guest lectures and conferences provide opportunities for students to interact with industry experts and researchers. Students also play an active role in organizing educational events like science fairs, agar art competition, quizzes, and poster presentations, fostering teamwork, leadership, and communication skills. The department also features spacious grounds for sports and organizes annual sports events, promoting physical well-being alongside academic growth of students.

  1. Research and Diagnostic Center  

The Institute offers state-of-the-art research facilities and is linked with Al-Aleem Center for Research & Development to study industrial microbiology, pharmaceutical microbiology, infection and disease diagnosis, genetic engineering, protein engineering, and microbial biotechnology.  In addition to research capabilities, a fully operational diagnostic laboratory is available within Gulab Devi Teaching Hospital. This facility offers a wide array of testing services that play a vital role in patient care and clinical decision making. Diagnostic services include:

  • Clinical Chemistry: Liver and kidney function tests, blood glucose analysis, and lipid profiling
  • Hematology: Complete blood counts, blood grouping, and coagulation studies
  • Microbiology: Culture and sensitivity testing, Gram and Ziehl-Neelsen staining, biochemical profiling, ELISA, and advanced molecular diagnostics such as PCR and real-time PCR.
  • Histopathology: Biopsy evaluation, tissue processing, and special staining procedures

All testing is conducted using reliable, evidence-based laboratory techniques and modern diagnostic systems to ensure precision and quality in reporting. Students from the Department of Microbiology at GDEC receive practical, hands-on training in this diagnostic laboratory. Under the guidance of experienced professionals, they work directly with clinical samples and engage with modern diagnostic techniques, gaining essential skills for their future careers in medical and research settings.

  1. Hospital Linkage

The Gulab Devi Teaching Hospital, Lahore, is a leading center for chest infections and a reference facility for Tuberculosis (TB). It plays a vital role in improving the health sector by effectively treating and preventing the spread of the disease. The TB Control Program, managed by Gulab Devi Teaching Hospital, is funded by World Health Organization (WHO). Moreover, the institute provides valuable skills and compels learning experiences to students by hands on experience in conducting laboratory experiments. Students from the 8th semester also undertake their internships in the TB Laboratory, where they gain practical exposure to diagnostic procedures and research related to tuberculosis.

  1. Collaborations of the Department

The faculty of Microbiology collaborates at national and international levels on research projects, contributing to technological advancements and skills development in the field of microbiology. Students are facilitated to do internship at various organizations; Allama Iqbal Medical College, Children Hospital, Lahore General Hospital, Shaukat Khanum Hospital, Provisional Public Health Reference Laboratory (Punjab AIDS control program), Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency, and Citi Lab etc. These partnerships provide valuable hands-on experience, enabling students to apply their knowledge in practical settings and gain essential skills in their field. Through these internships, students can enhance their professional development and prepare for successful careers in microbiology and related disciplines.
